2D Echo Test in Karkardooma, East Delhi: Echocardiography with Colour Doppler

A 2D echo is an ultrasound scan of the heart. A probe with gel is moved over your chest to show live pictures of the heart’s chambers, walls and valves, and colour Doppler shows how blood flows through them. It uses sound waves, not radiation, so it is safe to repeat.

Time needed
20 to 30 minutes
Where
Karkardooma, East Delhi
Results
The cardiologist reviews the images and usually discusses the findings with you on the same visit.

Why the 2D Echo test is done

What it checks:

  • How strongly the heart pumps, measured as the ejection fraction (EF)
  • The size and wall thickness of each chamber
  • Whether the heart valves are narrowed (stenosis) or leaking (regurgitation)
  • Areas of heart muscle that move less well, for example after a heart attack
  • An estimate of pressure in the lungs’ blood vessels
  • Fluid around the heart, and some heart conditions present from birth

Why your doctor may have advised it

Common reasons include:

  • Breathlessness, tiredness, or swelling of the feet
  • A heart murmur heard by the doctor
  • An abnormal ECG
  • After a heart attack, or with chest pain
  • Long-standing high blood pressure or diabetes
  • Monitoring heart failure, valve disease or the effect of treatment

How to prepare

  • No fasting is needed; take your usual medicines
  • Wear a top that is easy to remove; you will be given a gown
  • Bring previous echo reports so changes can be compared

What happens

  1. You lie on your left side on the couch
  2. ECG pads are placed on your chest, and gel is put on the probe
  3. The probe is moved over your chest and below the ribs; you may be asked to hold your breath briefly
  4. You may hear the sound of blood flow during the Doppler part

Results

The cardiologist reviews the images and usually discusses the findings with you on the same visit. Your report includes the ejection fraction and the valve findings.

Questions about the 2D Echo test

Is a 2D echo the same as an ECG?

No. An ECG records the heart’s electrical activity. A 2D echo is an ultrasound that shows the heart’s structure and how well it pumps. They answer different questions and are often done together.

Is a 2D echo safe?

Yes. It uses ultrasound, the same type used in pregnancy scans, with no radiation.

What is a normal ejection fraction?

An ejection fraction of about 55% or more is usually normal. Lower values mean the heart is pumping less strongly; the doctor will explain what your result means for you.

Do I need to fast?

No. You can eat and take your medicines as usual.

Will I need to repeat the echo?

Sometimes. In heart failure or valve disease, echo is repeated to see how the heart responds to treatment.
