TMT Test (Treadmill Stress Test) in Karkardooma, East Delhi

In a TMT, also called an exercise stress test, you walk on a treadmill that gradually gets faster and steeper while your ECG, heart rate and blood pressure are recorded. Some heart problems, especially narrowed arteries, show up only when the heart is working hard.

Time needed
30 to 45 minutes in total
Where
Karkardooma, East Delhi
Results
The cardiologist reviews the recording and explains the result.

Why the TMT test is done

What it checks:

  • Whether the heart muscle gets enough blood during exercise
  • How your heart rate and blood pressure respond to effort
  • Irregular heartbeats brought on by exercise
  • How much exercise you can safely do (exercise capacity)

Why your doctor may have advised it

Common reasons include:

  • Chest discomfort, tightness or breathlessness on walking or climbing stairs
  • Checking for coronary artery disease when you have risk factors
  • Follow-up after angioplasty or bypass surgery
  • Before starting a vigorous exercise programme
  • Checking how well treatment is working

How to prepare

  • Have a light meal 2 to 3 hours before; avoid a heavy meal
  • Wear comfortable clothes and walking or sports shoes
  • Avoid tea, coffee and smoking for a few hours before the test
  • Ask your doctor whether to stop any medicine before the test; do not stop medicines on your own
  • Bring previous ECG and echo reports

What happens

  1. The doctor checks your history and resting ECG first to make sure the test is suitable
  2. ECG pads and a BP cuff are fitted
  3. You walk on the treadmill; every few minutes it gets a little faster and steeper
  4. Tell the team at once if you feel chest pain, dizziness or unusual breathlessness
  5. After the exercise you rest while your ECG and BP return to normal

Results

The cardiologist reviews the recording and explains the result. A positive TMT means the ECG changed in a way that suggests reduced blood supply; the doctor may then advise a stress echo or an angiogram.

Questions about the TMT test

Is a TMT safe?

For most people, yes. The test is supervised throughout and stopped early if you have symptoms or the recordings change. The doctor checks your history and resting ECG first to decide whether a TMT is suitable.

How long will I walk on the treadmill?

Usually between 6 and 12 minutes, depending on your fitness and how your heart responds. The whole visit takes 30 to 45 minutes.

What if I cannot walk on a treadmill?

Tell us when booking. The doctor may suggest a different test.

What does a positive TMT mean?

It suggests the heart may not be getting enough blood during exercise. It is not a final diagnosis; further tests confirm it. TMT can sometimes be falsely positive, especially in women.

How is a TMT different from a stress echo?

A TMT looks at the ECG during exercise. A stress echo adds ultrasound pictures of the heart before and after exercise, which gives more detail.
